Platinum Hallmarks

Hallmarks or assay marks are the marks given to a platinum object under The Hallmarking Act 1973 (ammended in 1999 to bring the Uk into line with European law).

A Hallmark means that the article has been independently tested y one of the four UK Assay offices - London, Birmingham, Sheffield and Edinburgh.

Each have their own mark to show where the piece was tasted.


Th panthers head denotes London
The anchor denotes Birmingham
The Yorkshire rose denotes Sheffield
Edinburgh Castle denotes Edinburgh

The purity of the platinum will will shown by the millesimal fineness system which denotes the purity of the platinum by parts per thousand of pure metal. 24 carat = 999 parts per thousand of platinum
